I was having a small discussion with a friend of mine the other day, it lead to me going mad and asking: Who am I? Who are you? Who is he? Who is she? Who are they? WHAT ARE WE?
We basically don’t own the bodies we currently have! As in, these bodies are given to us by Allah for a certain period of time, a period of our life here on earth. Now, if you don’t own the thing then it’s not yours! So, if I don’t own this body, then it wont not mine which means I am not me! Then who am I?
Am I the spirit? Where is that spirit and what’s that spirit! I don’t even own that spirit, it can be taken away at any moment! So who am I?
Am I the soul? We know nothing about souls, and they are spirits and spirits are souls! It just get complicated! Again, they are not mine! Then who am I?
Am I the mind? Well we know that the mind is the power of thinking, and it’s believed to be in the brain. But again that brain is part of the body which I don’t own in the first place! So I’m not the mind! Who am I then?
If I have none of those then I am none of those! Then I don’t exist, while I do exist! It’s just getting complicated!
IMO: We are given our soul, a heart and a brain (well most of us) for a certain period of time. We are responsible for them during that period, even though we don’t “own” them. I believe we are these three things combined together, but if I had to choose one, it would be the soul.
Our souls return in the afterlife, so we’re still around – let’s just worry about where.
heh, oh the wisdom I have in me today!
Who are we?
You said “we” are given the soul, heart, and brain. But what are we exactly?
LOL! You always had wisdom of your own
“we”, “you”, “me”, “i” are just labels to distinguish one person from another. Just like our names do. When I say person, I mean a human being with the three: soul, heart and brain – living or dead.
Some dead people are more alive than the living.
That’s what I believe. Thanks for the compliment, though trust me – it’s so easy to talk, applying what I say and believe is the hard part!!
You know, that’s what I think we are; we are the three together! Finally we agreed on something
well, its not about finally agreeing on something – though that was nice – it’s about sharing perspectives and understanding different point of views. I wonder, when you asked yourself all these questions – what sort of answers or guesses did you come up with?
Different answers can all be correct, in some cases – for example, describe a building from one corner and allow me to describe the same building from another angle. We would have different descriptions even though its the same building. I’ve been reading about this in De Bono’s book (How to Have a Beautiful Mind).
Well, I didn’t get much answers! But I had a little talk with a friend of mine, I’m not 100% with that answer, but that what I’m comfortable with. Thinking about that question leads you to answering many questions and doubts thrown by atheists asking about the existence of God!
